Health Informatics (Elective)

This module will explore the breadth of health informatics and how to use health informatics research to improve healthcare. Along with learning the key methodological considerations, students will examine the legal and ethical challenges of collecting personal health data and gain the skills and knowledge to undertake basic data linkage and health informatics research. The module will assist students in developing the Information Communications Technology (ICT) skills and knowledge required to support and improve health and healthcare delivery.

The module comprises of the following 6 sessions.

2. Data Management & Advanced Analytics in Healthcare
3. Data Analysis Techniques for Nursing Informatics
4. Testing Data in Health Informatics
5. The Impact of Health Informatics on Nursing Practice
6. The Future of Health Informatics & The Role of Nurses

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:

1. Prescribe validated apps and digital products.
2. Advise patients on the use of apps and digital products.
3. Interpret the clinical data that they generate.
4. Contribute to creating systems to assess and report safety concerns.
5. Use patient data to support the development of care
6. Use of digital tools in the clinical context

Each module will be assessed based on the following components:

1. Quality of Contributions in Forums: 20%
   • Evaluation of participation and the quality of insights shared in online discussion forums.
2. Quality of Contributions in Tutorials: 20%
   • Assessment of engagement and contributions during tutorial sessions.
3. Assignment/Case Study: 60%
   • Completion and quality of assignments that demonstrate understanding and application of the course material.

Passing Criteria:

• Students must achieve an aggregate of 50% or higher across the three components to pass each module.

Scholarship Schemes for Maltese residents:

• MySkills Scheme: Malta residents are eligible for up to 80% reimbursement, capped at €5,000, subject to eligibility criteria. International students would be able to apply for the MySkills Scheme once they obtain their Student Temporary Residence Card (TRC). (For individual modules only)
