The Award in Essentials of Management is an EQF/MQF Level 5 course accredited with 8 ECTS credits. The course will provide tools and necessary knowledge and the skill in applying management practices which would help grow and manage a business. It is based on current best practices, which we ourselves apply in the consultancy roles in applying management practices in different organisations. Particularly, the course deals with the four key functions of management, developing and using a business plan, project management and quality management. The course is delivered fully online over a period of 6 weeks.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:
- Apply planning models in the defining the mission of business units
- Show an understanding on the design and implementation of control systems to ensure compliance with an organisation’s strategy and risk tolerance
- Demonstrate how coordination is linked with the proper assignment of authority and responsibilities within the organisation
- Practice moral values and corporate social responsibility in the area of responsibility
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role that an organisation’s vision, mission and Goals & Objectives have in the marketing process.
- Show the required steps that an organisation has to follow in assessing its internal and external environment
- Understand the practical challenges in applying market segmentation strategies to achieve a desired position in the target market segment
- Integrate functional plans such as a Marketing plan, in the organisation’s Business plan
- Demonstrate an understanding of the various advantages and disadvantages of the various organisational or business unit setups
- Apply best practices to successfully adapt to unfamiliar cultural settings and promote change
- Design a questionnaire to measure the organisation’s aptitude for learning
- Demonstrate the practical issues of the implementation of HR practices
- Apply best practices in attracting top candidates and inducting them in the organisation
- Review the competency requirements of the organisation and its current resources in order to design a training programme
- Practice leadership skills in the workplace
- Apply time management, risk and costing techniques in project planning to manage trade-offs on cost/quality/time and risk
- Show how the value chain concept can be applied in organisations irrespective whether they are operating in an offline or online environment
- Understand how the concepts of Quality Assurance and Quality control can be applied in the organisation’s operations
- Show how Kanban and Scrum frameworks function within different departments of the organisation
- Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of the financial setup affect the operations of a business
- Demonstrate an understanding of the risks of misinformation
- Use basic Accounting Ratios to monitor financial and operational performance
- Apply the Budget concept within the framework of an organisation’s strategy
Each module will be assessed based on the following components:
- Quality of Contributions in Forums: 30%
- Evaluation of participation and the quality of insights shared in online discussion forums.
- Quality of Contributions in Tutorials: 20%
- Assessment of engagement and contributions during tutorial sessions.
- Research-Based Assignments: 50%
- Completion and quality of research-based assignments that demonstrate understanding and application of the course material.
Passing Criteria:
- Students must achieve an aggregate of 50% or higher across the three components to pass each module.
Scholarship Schemes for Maltese residents:
- MySkills Scheme: Malta residents are eligible for up to 80% reimbursement, capped at €5,000, subject to eligibility criteria. International students would be able to apply for the MySkills Scheme once they obtain their Student Temporary Residence Card (TRC). (For individual modules only)
