The Award in Principles of Management module seeks to provide students with the skills necessary for an entrepreneur or senior executive within an SME to understand the role of management and to master effective management skills to lead the SME organisation. The course focuses on the four core functions of management and how these can be developed and customised to be as sophisticated or complex as the organisation in which they are to be used. It seeks to identify best practice and provide an overview of current management practices within SME organisations. The course enables students to critically review such practices enabling them to adopt, adapt and apply such practices within a particular SME organisation. The focus throughout the programme is the importance of developing a culture of management in an SME organisation that is based on respect. Respect can only be earned where the focus is on building credibility and integrity through consistent and fair management behaviour.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:
- Apply planning models in the defining the mission of business units.
- Design control systems to ensure compliance with an organisation’s strategy and risk tolerance.
- Develop a Corporate Strategic plan.
- Apply knowledge of organisational setups in analysing the various advantages and disadvantages of different organisational or business unit setups.
- Design a research methodology to measure the organisation’s aptitude for learning.
- Demonstrate the practical issues in the implementation of HR practices.
- Create an organisation’s recruitment and training framework.
Each module will be assessed based on the following components:
- Quality of Contributions in Forums: 30%
- Evaluation of participation and the quality of insights shared in online discussion forums.
- Quality of Contributions in Tutorials: 20%
- Assessment of engagement and contributions during tutorial sessions.
- Research-Based Assignments: 50%
- Completion and quality of research-based assignments that demonstrate understanding and application of the course material.
Passing Criteria:
- Students must achieve an aggregate of 50% or higher across the three components to pass each module.
Scholarship Schemes for Maltese residents:
- MySkills Scheme: Malta residents are eligible for up to 80% reimbursement, capped at €5,000, subject to eligibility criteria. International students would be able to apply for the MySkills Scheme once they obtain their Student Temporary Residence Card (TRC). (For individual modules only)
- Get Qualified Scheme ( Scheme available for Maltese residents ) – 70% refund of course fee as a tax rebate
