Advenio eAcademy Malta

Master's Degree in Entrepreneurship

This programme provides the theoretical concepts and frameworks that are particularly relevant to an entrepreneur starting up a new venture or managing a Small or Medium Enterprise (SME) where the multiplicity of management skills is an essential pre-requisite for success.

The involvement of multiple higher educational institutes (MHEIs) from different countries in this project is critical as it immediately provides students with an international perspective to their studies and their perspective of business operations. To a great extent the involvement of MHEIs and the mixed virtual classrooms that will be the result of intakes for the different MHEIs, provides opportunities for students to get first-hand experience of multi-cultural challenges and the need to learn how to work in virtual organisations.

The programme makes wide use of the system integrated video conferencing, enabling multiple students from different countries to meet on-line and discuss and work on projects in interactive video conference rooms. The course-work calls on students to use online project management tools and develop interactive presentations integrating skills and competencies of diverse students groups.

These course elements are all critical to the development of today’s entrepreneur – visionaries who can understand the role of strategy and master its implementation to lead and build teams which add real value to the customer groups they serve.

The course will provide students with the skills that enable them to demonstrate their specialised or multi-disciplinary knowledge of the challenges related to successful entrepreneurship. This includes their ability to reflecting on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgements in their roles as entrepreneurs. The programme gives them the skills to perform critical evaluations and analysis with incomplete or limited information to solve problems in new or unfamiliar environments. Their experience in research-based assignments throughout the coursework will also assist them in producing original research when required to support any of their entrepreneurial initiatives. In addition, the course will help them develop new skills in response to emerging knowledge and techniques facing SMEs in all markets. It will then be up to them to develop and utilise leadership skills and innovation skills to enable them to operate in complex and unpredictable work environments which are so typical of today’s open international markets.

  1. Academic Qualifications:
    • A Pass in a Bachelor’s Degree or higher
  2. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must provide proof of proficiency in English through one of the following:
    • International language certification
      OR
    • Proof of university attendance where the language of instruction was English
      OR
    • Proof of work experience of more than 4 years in an international business where English was the primary language.

The Master’s Degree in Entrepreneurship is designed for Level 6 graduates from both business and non-business fields who are actively involved in business activities. This programme aims to further develop their competencies, supporting those already running their own businesses and preparing those eager to start new ventures or assume top management roles within SME organisations.

This programme is particularly suited for practitioners—individuals who are either running their own businesses or in the process of setting one up. Entrepreneurs and managers within SMEs will be able to build upon their practical knowledge, developing strategic and creative responses with a blend of specialised theoretical knowledge. The curriculum is focused on the entrepreneur’s perspective, enabling participants to take their businesses to the next level. As part of the programme, students will have the option to select 2 out of 3 elective modules to tailor their learning experience.

The target group for this programme includes SMEs employing between 10 to 250 employees, as these businesses need to establish and sustain formal structures for growth and long-term development.

By the end of the course, students should acquire the following knowledge:

  • the comprehensive specialised or multi-disciplinary theoretical and practical knowledge which forms the basis of original research, which may contribute to social and ethical issues enabling students to critically analyse, contract and compare management theories concerning entrepreneurship and their implementation in the real world of SMEs;
  • the capability in using knowledge and skills, to understand market trends adapting to the fast-changing business environment and to manage people and projects efficiently based on critical analysis of the surrounding environments. This calls for a correlation of an organisation’s vision, mission, strategy and core values in the development and implementation of an organisation’s winning strategy – one that adds value to customers in a sustainable manner.
  • The ability to communicate with specialist and non-specialist audiences clearly and unambiguously the conclusions and knowledge which may be the outcome of original research, self-study or experience reflecting their critical evaluation how the internal and external environment impact the future of their business.
  • The ability to perform critical evaluations and analysis with incomplete or limited information to solve problems in new or unfamiliar contexts, and to produce original research required as a basis for any entrepreneurial initiative.

General Pedagogical Methods used for this Programme

The course is based on a combination of self-learning and collaborative learning allowing for a mix of learning tools to facilitate on-line learning and foster collaboration and communication between faculty and students and between students. The main tools can be described as:-

  1. Pre-recorded audio-visual elearning presentations – these sessions, typically one hour lectures recorded and presented as four 15 minute segments, allow for student downloading on tablets or smartphones and provide students with convenient access to specially prepared and recorded sessions. These fast paced sessions take the students through the core subject matter and highlight readings and supplementary materials required. The system allows students to take their own notes online as they listen to particular session, storing their notes of each lecture for subsequent referral or printing.
  2. On-line forums – these forums compel the students to read the supplementary readings and related materials and learn how to critically analyse and comment on their findings. The forums allow students to build and follow threads of discussion fostering greater critical thought and analysis of content. Forum topics are changed every alternate week, giving students two weeks to participate in each forum. Forum contributions are moderated and reviewed by Faculty who seek to encourage and direct the on-line forum discussion and evaluations. Grading of forum participation of students is taken as part of the on-going student evaluation in each module.
  3. Onsite / Live video-conference workshop tutorials – these weekly or bi-weekly pre-scheduled on-site/on-line activities provide students with the opportunity to interact directly with Faculty to discuss specific issues which may have been raised during the pre-recorded lecture sessions or through other course materials or activities. These sessions provide students with the chance to discuss directly with the tutor and to get to know their fellow students on-line.
  4. FAQs – each module includes a standard list of Frequently Asked Questions which help students get to grips with the core elements of the subject.
  5. Additional tools such as peer-referred articles, pod casts, video materials are also included to provide the students with a broader understanding of the subject.
  6. Self-evaluation tests – on completion of the course materials, the system will automatically open for students a self-evaluation test to assist them in determining whether they have reached the expected level of competence in the subject. When students do not pass this test, they are able to review their marked responses to find out where they went wrong and thereby learn from their mistakes.
  7. On-line libraries such as EBSCO giving access to peer-reviewed publications and materials which will be available to students once the course commences. Core readings for subjects will be from peer-referred journals and books. eBooks by Bookboon will continue to be used to supplement the academic perspective as many of those selected for the course materials provide very practical hands-on checklists and frameworks.
  8. Evaluation for each module will be based on student on-going participation (fora and tutorials as well as an assignment or case study)
  9. Internship project including journal and internship embedded business development project report and presentation
  10. Final Business Plan Project report and presentation
